General information of the MA program of Chinese Language and Culture

The MA Program of Chinese Language and Culture is a program given by Chinese Language and Literature Department to international students, including English project and Chinese project. The English project will use English as the teaching language, while the Chinese project will use Chinese as the teaching language. Both projects will give courses on Chinese language, traditional and modern culture of China. Our aim is to help students to be not only good at Chinese but also familiar with Chinese culture and China.

This program is also available to various kinds of foreigners besides overseas students. For example, as to the employees in universities, companies and government offices, this project will help them to know how to communicate and collaborate with Chinese partners and how to work in China; as to the tourist guides, this project will help them meet the wide requirements of tourism to China; as to the overseas Chinese, this project will help them to have the knowledge and experience in teaching Chinese and Chinese culture in their countries.

Chinese culture and Chinese literature are inseparable, especially in ancient China. Faculties in Chinese Language and Literature Department of Fudan University have not only rich teaching experiences, but also deep and sound knowledge on Chinese literature and culture. We have outstanding experts in different fields, such as old and modern Chinese, classical Chinese literature, modern and contemporary Chinese literature, folklore study, film study, comparative literature, etc. They will give students wonderful guidance on ancient and modern Chinese culture.

 

General information of Chinese Language and Literature Department

Chinese Language and Literature Department of Fudan University is founded in 1925. At present, this department includes both the Department of Chinese Language and Literature and the Institute of Chinese Language and Literature. There are six teaching and research divisions in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature: modern and contemporary literature, classical literature, theories of art and literature, writing, Chinese language and comparative literature. In addition, there are also a language lab, modern literature research room and research room of Chinese traditional culture. And the Institute of Chinese Language and Literature is made up of six research rooms: the history of Chinese literature criticism, modern and contemporary literature, grammar and rhetoric, Wu dialect, theoretical linguistics and aesthetics. In order to develop the academic research of departments, the Department has established other six research centers except Chinese Ancient Literature Research Center which is recognized as the key research base of the Ministry of Education. They are as follows: Art, Literature and Aesthetics Research Center, the World Chinese Culture Research Center, Film Art Research Center, Chinese Contemporary Literary Creation and Research Center, Speech-Audio Science Research Center and Artistic Anthropology and Folk Literature Research Center. Other institutes and research centers that are attached to the Department of Chinese Language and Literature include Fudan University Taiwan and Hong Kong Literature Institute, Fudan University Unearthened Literature and Ancient Characters Research Center.

There are 92 in-service faculties in the Department of Chinese Language and Literature (including Chinese Language and Literature Institute), among whom 37 are professors (25 Ph.D advisors), 32 are associate professors. Over the past years, all the teachers have made great achievements in teaching and research. Take the recent ten years for example. Since the reform and opening up, teachers have got 16 teaching and textbook awards given by the country and Shanghai municipality, published more than 300 textbooks and academic monographs, published several thousand essays and papers and won more than 170 National and Shanghai Philosophical Social Science Awards.

There are 11 specialties in doctor’s degree and 13 specialties in master’s degree. The mobile station for post-doctoral Chinese research was established in 1995 too.

With more frequent international exchanges and learning Chinese craze, courses of teaching Chinese and Chinese culture to international students is established in Chinese Language and Literature Department, not only to undergraduates, but also to graduates, Ph. D candidates and students for further study. Up to the present, it has established good relationships with more than 20 universities in foreign countries, exchanging teachers and students for academic exchanges in many fields.

 The Chinese Language and Literature Department offers all kinds and levels of study options to international students: full-time candidates of undergraduate degree, master’s degree or doctoral degree; visiting students for one year, one semester or one month, visiting teachers for one year, etc. The Department offers also inter-university and inter-department exchange programs, including both experts and students. Apart from these, it has set to arrange special courses to international teachers and students for HSK and Teaching Certificate.

 

Educational Facilities

Teachers in this program are chosen from the in-service experts in Chinese Language and Literature Department of Fudan University. They are academically strong, with both the West and East knowledge. 50 out of the 80 experts in this department have doctoral degree, as well as rich experiences of teaching Chinese as a foreign language. During the past 10 years, 84 experts in this department have taught Chinese abroad in 21 universities.

The Chinese Language and Literature Department has the 10th to 15th floors in Guanghua Building as its office building since 2006, which is the highest building in the university campus in China. Besides the administrative offices, the Department there has several classrooms, conference rooms, multimedia rooms and party room, which are available to every kind of teaching and researching activities. Professors of the department have their work offices there too. The Department now covers near 700 square meters and has more than 100,000 books.

The Foreign Students Office of the Department takes care of the studies and lives of all foreign students in this department. Chinese students and foreign students in this department have good relationships. They help each other in their studies, and give several regular or irregular activities together every year. Foreign students are welcomed to participate in the Hongwen Society and Beichen Society too, which is the student society in this department.

 

 

Admission Criteria

Degree student

Undergraduate course work
Credentials documenting prerequisite academic work that gives evidence of ability to pursue a graduate program in your chosen area are required. To be considered for admission, you should have completed what Fudan University considers the equivalent of a four-year baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited college or university prior to beginning graduate studies.
Grade point average

At minimum, a cumulative grade point average equivalent to at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (B grade) in all prior undergraduate college-level course work is required.
TOEFL or IELTS scores
To be qualified, applicants should have a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 550 or higher; or an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 5 or higher. Applicants from countries where English is the official language are exempted from this requirement.
Two letters of recommendation

 

Non-degree student

Applicants must be undergraduate students or have completed a bachelor degree. TOEFL score of 550 or higher; or IELTS score of 5 or higher

 

Length of schooling: 2 years.

Requirements:

It needs 30 credits to graduate. Students are also required to complete a thesis no less than 20000 English words.

Tuition and application processing fee:

50,000RMB/year. Enrollment fee and Visa fee will be charged by Fudan University.

Application fee (non-refundable): Degree Students is RMB 810 or US$105 / Non-degree Student is RMB400 or US$55 in cash, cheque or by mail remittance.

 

AccommodationApartments for International Students.

Double room is 70 RMB/day/person; Single room is 90 RMB/day/person

Application schedule
Applicants can mail applications beginning in January 1st and ending in May 30th. Result, either acceptance or rejection, will be emailed to the applicants as soon as the decision is made. 

 

Completing the application
Procedures:

a.      Download Admission Application Form online and complete it. http://www.fso.fudan.edu.cn/en/ziliao.htm.

b.      Send the application, the application fee and other required materials to the Foreign Student Admissions Office of Fudan University by the application deadline.

c.      Both admission and non-admission decisions will be informed by email and by letter. If accepted, applicants will receive an admission letter, a Foreign Student Visa Application Form (Form JW202), and a Physical Examination Certificate for Foreign Citizen.

d.      Accepted applicants should undergo all medical examinations required by the Physical Examination Certificate for Foreign Citizen at private or public medical facilities.

e.      Applicants should bring the admission letter, completed Foreign Student Visa Application Form (Form JW202), Physical Examination Certificate for Foreign Citizen, to Chinese embassy or consulate-general for the X or F Visa. (Note: Applicants must retain the original Form JW202. Chinese embassy or consulate-general only requires its copies.)

f.      Applicants must register at CHINESE LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE DEPARTMENT with the admission letter, the Foreign Student Visa Application Form (Form JW202) and Physical Examination Certificate for Foreign Citizen no later than the registration deadline indicated in the admission letter. An approval for late registration must be issued by the CHINESE LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE DEPARTMENT. Late registration without a prior approval will not be accepted.
